Biography
Rajesh Bomjan – The Pioneer of Paragliding in Nepal
Early Life and Family Background
Rajesh Bomjan was born in 2035 B.S. in Baidam, Lakeside, Pokhara, into a family deeply rooted in Nepal’s adventure tourism industry. His father, Biru Bomjan, was a visionary who founded a trekking company in 1990 A.D.. Rajesh later expanded this legacy by introducing paragliding, a sport that would redefine Nepal’s adventure tourism landscape.
The Journey into Paragliding
Rajesh Bomjan and his team first tested paragliding in Pokhara in 2053 B.S.. His father had already started promoting paragliding as early as 1992 A.D., but it faced significant hurdles. At that time, Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority had no policies or regulations for paragliding, making its legalization a long struggle.
By 1996 A.D., his father partnered with foreign experts to establish paragliding as an official recreational sport in Nepal. It took 2–3 years of effort to convince the government to register Nepal’s first paragliding company.
Nepal’s First Paragliding Pilot
Rajesh Bomjan officially started his professional career as a paraglider in 2064 B.S., but his journey began much earlier. At just 18 years old in 1996, he took to the skies, pioneering Nepal’s first paragliding flights. His dedication and expertise earned him License No. 1, making him Nepal’s first certified paragliding pilot.
A Legacy in Adventure Tourism
Rajesh firmly believes that paragliding is not an extreme sport but a safe and thrilling recreational activity. He often says:
“Paragliding is much safer than driving on the road. I am still on the safe side and have flown safely for several years.”
His contributions have played a crucial role in making Pokhara one of the world’s top paragliding destinations. Today, thanks to his pioneering efforts, Nepal stands as a global hub for adventure aviation.
